PDF to Audio

Drop in a PDF and hear it read aloud in seconds. DocuVocal cleans the text first, so you hear the book and not the page numbers.

Want to keep it?

Turn this book into an audiobook you can download: an M4B with chapters, MP3 files, or a feed for your podcast app. The DocuVocal Library is on its way, with chapters you can edit and fair per-book pricing.

How it works

  1. 1

Drop your PDF here or pick it from your files.

  2. 2

We pull out clean text and skip headers, footers and page numbers.

  3. 3

Press play, follow the highlighted sentence, and change the speed any time.

Hear the book, not the page furniture

Most read-aloud tools read everything printed on a page, so a sentence gets cut in half by a running header or a page number. DocuVocal looks at the whole document before it reads. It removes lines that repeat at the top and bottom of every page, drops page numbers, rejoins words that were split with a hyphen at the end of a line, and carries a sentence across a page break. Reference lists at the end of papers are skipped by default.

A voice you can listen to for an hour

Your browser voice starts instantly. For longer listening, switch on the natural voice: a modern AI voice that downloads once (about 90 to 330 MB, depending on your device) and then runs on your own computer or phone. You can slow it down to 0.5× for difficult material or speed it up to 3× for skimming, and jump back or forward one sentence or one paragraph at a time.

Scanned PDFs work too

If your PDF is a scan with no selectable text, DocuVocal offers to read it with text recognition (OCR). It is slower than a normal PDF because every page has to be recognised first, but you can start listening as soon as it finishes.

Questions

Is the PDF to audio converter free?

Yes. Listening is free with no account and no trial. The free reader handles PDFs up to 50 pages; longer files are read up to page 50 and you will see a notice.

Can I download my PDF as an MP3 or an audiobook?

Not in the free reader yet. The DocuVocal Library, coming soon, turns whole books into audiobooks you keep: an M4B file with chapters, MP3 files per chapter, or a private podcast feed for your favourite podcast app. Join early access to hear first.

Why does DocuVocal skip page numbers and headers?

Because hearing "Page 42, Chapter Three" in the middle of a sentence ruins the flow. We detect text that repeats at the edges of pages and leave it out, so the narration sounds like the book itself.

Which voice should I use for long PDFs?

Try the natural voice. It sounds far less robotic than most built-in voices and is easier to follow for long stretches. If your device cannot run it, DocuVocal falls back to your browser voice automatically.

Does it remember where I stopped?

Yes. Open the same PDF again in the same browser and DocuVocal offers to continue from the sentence where you stopped.
